A student of St. Monica’s College of Education in the Ashanti region has revealed that the viral video of a priest kissing three students during church service at the school was a show of appreciation by the priest.

According to the student, Father Obeng Larbi of the Anglican Church decided to kiss the final-year students for their years of service reading the bible during church services.

The incident happened last Sunday.

Speaking to Francis Abban on the Morning Starr Tuesday, the first-year student (name withheld) said authorities of the school are currently looking the student who recorded and shared the video on the incident.

“The father is the video kissing the students didn’t know we were going to post the video. We were not comfortable with the situation that’s why we were shouting. This is the first time he’s doing this. He gave the school chaplain a kiss and then did same to the 3 female Bible readers. The third girl the father kissed is a virgin and that’s why she gave her cheek to the father to kiss but he forced and kissed her lips. Afterward the incident, she said the father had broken her virginity,” she recounted.

The video which has gone viral on social media shows the priest on stage inviting the three students for a mouth-to-mouth kiss one after the other. The preacher is seen directing the students to drop their face masks for the kiss.

A teacher in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality in the Central region has impregnated three girls in the same class, according to a lecturer with the University of Cape Coast Counselling Centre, Dr Kyeremeh Tawiah Dabone.

According to Dr Kyeremeh, the situation is threatening the future prospects of the young girls in the municipality. He added that a formal complaint has been lodged against the teacher for appropriate sanctions to be applied against him.

He made the revelation during a seminar by the Ghana Education Service’ Counselling and Guidance Centre at Kwadaso in the Ashanti region to equip school-based counsellors on the need for the counsellors to offer psychosocial support to school kids.

Seven other girls have also been impregnated by their close relatives in the municipality. The situation according to the GES will have a serious physiological effect on the girls when schools resume full operations.

Dr Kyeremeh said the COVID-19 restrictions exposed the children to all forms of abuse which are unusual and has led to psychological effects among the children.

Mr Stephen Asare Brew, the Kwadaso Municipal Educational Coordinator of the Counsellor and Guidance unit of GES, also stated that these abuses have affected the children physiologically leading to suicide among some of them.

He added that the children who have been exposed to some of these abuses and are suffering psychologically need immediate counselling to rescue them.

Mr Brew said sexual abuse by teachers is against the code of ethics of GES staff adding that GES is committed to punishing any teacher who is involved in the act.

He explained that several students who are victims of teacher-student sexual abuse fail to report to the proper authorities making it difficult to issue sanctions to the teachers.

A student of Kumasi Girls SHS in Kumasi has said she was kicked in the abdomen by a military officer who had come with his colleagues to restore calm during a protest by students on Tuesday.

It comes after the Police in a statement denied reports that they assaulted students of the Kumasi Girls SHS and St. Louis SHS who were reportedly protesting the cancellation of their midterm break.

Speaking to Francis Abban on Morning Starr, the 3rd year student said some of her colleagues sustained major injuries as a result of the brutalities.

“When the military and police entered the school they entered the dormitories and started beating us because we refused to stop screaming. They kicked us on the floor. Some of the colleagues had marks on their bodies and some were also bleeding as a result of the canes we were being beaten with.

“We were kicked on the floor by the military and police officers. I was kicked in the abdomen by a military officer,” she recounted Wednesday.

She described the police denial as false.

“The police are lying. We were beaten”.

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has denied reports that its officers assaulted some students who were protesting over the cancellation of their mid-term break by the Ghana Education.

The officers were reportedly called into a protest by students of St. Louis SHS and Kumasi Girls who were angry over the midterm cancellation.

Some media accounts suggest a combined team of police and military stormed the schools and assaulted the students.

However, in a statement, the Police said the media reports do not reflect true state of occurrences at the schools.

A self-acclaimed scholarship secretariat director at Sehwi Asawinso has been grabbed by the police for using his ‘office’ to ‘bonk’ applicants.

Peterson Fosuhene was arrested following a set-up by one of his victims he lured to a hotel.

According to reports, the suspect is fond of contacting applicants that an error had been detected on their forms, and that he is in the best capacity to help rectify it.

Once the applicant agrees to his help, he is said to demand sex as payment, on his terms.

That is the same pick up line he used on Priscilla Adu, a College of Education student who facilitated his arrest.

Not aware of her background as a sister of the Assemblyman for Seyerano electoral area, Collins Nkrumah, he made his move.

Speaking to Adom Fm’ Augustine Boah on the plot, she said she initially declined his offer, but he was persistent, an action she said made her suspect foul play.

With the help of her family, she hatched a plan to accept the offer and have police in waiting to grab the self-acclaimed director.

He was arrested at an undisclosed hotel in a vicinity at Asafo, while preparing for the romp.

Following his arrest, it has been revealed that he is not a staff of the said secretariat, neither is he a member of any of the branches.

Authorities suspect that he gained details of his victims from the secretariat’s notice board for applicants.

A total of 35 Senior High School students in Suhum Municipality in the Eastern region have delivered while seven are heavily pregnant.

The pregnancies and the deliveries occurred between March 2020 to April 2021 in three Senior high schools.

The schools are; Islamic Girls Senior High School which recorded 15 deliveries and 4 pregnancies. Suhum Technical Senior High Schools (SUTESCO) also recorded 8 deliveries and pregnancies while Suhum Presbyterian Senior High School (PRESEC) recorded two (2) deliveries and 2 pregnancies.

The Suhum Municipal director of Education, Esther Quaye said this during the inauguration of the ‘Municipal Advocacy Platform for Back to School campaign taskforce’ instituted to ensure that school dropouts return to school after the long closure of schools as a result of Covid-19.

The Municipal Education Director said, at the basic level, five students ages 12 to 20 years were impregnated during the period.

They include 12 and 13-year-old class four (4) and Class six (6) pupils respectively while the rest are Junior High School pupils.

Even though there were concerns that the implementation n of the double-track system as part of the Free Senior High School Policy increased the risk vulnerability of female students, the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 led to a lockdown and 10 months closure of schools worsened the menace.

More than 100,000 teenage pregnancies were recorded nationwide during 2020.

The Municipal Education director stated that, even though there is the likelihood that some pupils have dropped out of school in the Suhum Municipality to engage in other economic activities such as Okada, hawking, selling on the streets, immoral activities among others, evidence shows that, Public basic schools in the municipality have seen an increase in enrollment as some parents have withdrawn their children from Private Schools to Public schools.

She stated that total enrolment in all 68 public Kindergartens in the municipality has increased from 4169 in March 2021 to 4,466 in May 2021. Again, enrolment in all 78 public primary schools has risen from 13,088 to 13,543. At the Junior High School, level enrolment also saw an increase during the same period from 566o to 6149.

Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has suspended the 2021 Students Representative Council (SRC) election-related activities following a clash between two halls of residence on campus.

Supporters of two SRC presidential aspirants, believed to be affiliated to University Hall (Katanga) and the Unity Hall (Conti), clashed Sunday during the vetting at the Great Hall of the University.

The feuding groups went on a rampage and destroyed school property, including chairs, flowerpots, and glass doors.

In a statement, signed by the University Relations Officer, Dr Daniel Norris Bekoe said: “Investigations so far revealed that one student is officially known to have sustained a minor injury in the palm from a broken bottle and is currently undergoing treatment; at the KNUST Hospital.”

It added that a joint security unit made up of the police and the University’s security personnel has since managed to restore calm on campus.

KNUST management has also indicated it will institute a committee to thoroughly probe the disturbances and put forward recommendations to prevent similar incidents from reoccurring.

The University authorities, however, assured parents and stakeholders that they will continue to provide a safe and secure environment for academic work on campus.

A 16-year-old final year student of Miracles Senior High School at Barkoniaba in the Sunyani east municipality of the Bono region has allegedly committed suicide.

Reports indicate that Leticia Kyere Pinaman was found hanging at the school’s dining hall by her colleagues on Monday around 9:30 pm.

It’s unclear what led to the incident.

Meanwhile, the Sunyani Municipal Police has conveyed the body and deposited it at a morgue in the Sunyani Regional Hospital for autopsy and preservation.

Some students of the Takoradi Technical University (TTU) have rejected the Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering certificates issued to them by the University upon completion of the programme in 2020.

They argued that before they enrolled for the course in August 2018, the authorities of TTU told them it had not secured accreditation to independently run the course.

Therefore, TTU was running the programme in affiliation with the Cape Coast Technical University (CTU) and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, USA.

However, upon completion of the programme in July 2020 and graduating in October, TTU issued them the certificates without any reference to CTU and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of TTU, has rejected their assertions and said that the institution was clothed with the mandate to issues the certificates.

Mr Kow Richardson-Nketsiah, PRO in a reaction to the aggrieved students’ concerns, told the GNA that, although the University was running the programme in affiliation with the Cape Coast Technical University, it received an accreditation last year to independently run the course.

Therefore, the TTU was cloaked with the power to issue the certificates to the students despite being enrolled before receiving the accreditation.

He said the grading system used for assessing the students was not different from the one used by the CTU.

More so, it was the lecturers of TTU who taught the students and marked their scripts.

He pledged the University’s readiness to engage the aggrieved students for further discussion.

Mr Justice Ato Bentil, the Course Leader for the 2020 batch, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview that, the aggrieved students would use every legal means and appropriate avenue to compel the authorities of TTU to issue them the right certificates.

He said the grading system and syllabus used during the duration of the course came from CTU and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical University, therefore, they expected the certificates to be issued by those institutions and not TTU.

The Course Leader explained that though the aggrieved students had met the Pro Vice Chancellor of TTU, Prof. Victor Kwaku Bondze Micah, on the issue, nothing concrete came out of the meeting.

Checks by the GNA at the National Accreditation Board (NAB) revealed that NAB issued accreditation to the TTU on May 7, 2020, to run Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering (Production Option).

The accreditation certificate number -NAB/1AC/003187 takes effect from May 11, 2020, and expires on May 10, 2023.

A letter sighted by the GNA indicated that the TTU terminated its affiliation with the Cape Coast Technical University on March 2, 2021.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has begun investigations into alleged corruption in the implementation of the School Feeding Programme under the Free Senior High School Policy.

The CID has, therefore, written to notify the Ghana Education Service (GES) of the ongoing investigations.

GES has, in turn, written to its Ashanti Region directorate, under which most of the infractions were committed.

In all, 53 schools have been identified.

Some are said to have exchanged food for cash.

“It will be appreciated if your office could cooperate and collaborate fully with the CID in carrying out the investigations,” ordered a letter signed by the Deputy Director General of the GES, Anthony Boateng, to the Ashanti Region Directorate.

District directors of education have also been asked to release headmasters, headmistresses, assistant heads, domestic bursars, accountants and storekeepers who would be invited for the investigations.
