The Achimota Senior High School in Accra has been hit with the deadly variant of COVID-19 – Delta, the Ghana Health Service has announced.
Before Achimota, senior High Schools had reportedly registered cases of the virus. About 135 cases of the variant were recorded out of the over 500 samples tested at Achimota.
“We had a significant number of the initial testing we did at Achimota School as Delta variant.
“So, once we have that we assume that because it is the source that was spread around, the majority of the variants there will be the Delta variant. All 135 cases at the time of diagnosis were either asymptomatic or had very mild to moderate illness. One member of staff is among those affected,” Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Patrick Kuma Aboagye noted a press conference in Accra.
He said 46 of the cases are still be treated while 89 have recovered.
The Ministry of Information, on Friday, 2 June 2021, announced that the Delta variant had been found in a community within the country.
“At 10:00hours on Friday, 2 July 2021, the Covid-19 task force was advised by the Ghana Health Service that the Delta variant of the SARS-Cov-2 virus has been recorded within a community (ie non-arriving passengers) in the latest round of genomic sequencing”, the Ministry posted on its Facebook page.
