Press Release

Notice is hereby served the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the general public that all Akyode delegates will not participate in the 2023 NPP Parliamentary Elections scheduled for Saturday 2nd December, 2023.

It would be recalled that in a Press Conference held at the International Press Centre on Thursday 30th November, 2023, we made our position clear that henceforth, Akyodes will no

longer participate in the party’s activities including this year’s Parliamentary Primaries and the 2024 General Elections. We still stand by our decision.

This follows our registered disappointment in the leadership of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) over their failure to provide adequate security for the celebration of our yam festival; thus, making us not only vulnerable but also victims of deadly attacks from our belligerent neighbors.

Also, the stunning silence and indifference of the party leadership and government appointees with the impression that the party neither cherishes our participation nor recognizes our in the Municipality and Region towards our plights in the current conflict situation leaves us membership in the party anymore. This denial and betrayal of trustis least expected especially from a party that Akyodes have consistently and unanimously endorsed since the beginning of constitutional rule.

Our decision is also informed by the fact that the security situation in Nkwanta remains highly volatilesince our assailants have still not been arrested; and this makes it more precarious for our people (Akyodes) who have become targets for unwarranted attacks and arrests, to participate in Saturday’s nationwide political exerciseat Nkwanta.

In the meantime, we are still mourning our people who were gruesomely murdered, and sympathizing with those whose houses and other properties were destroyed. We therefore wish to be left alone, just as we have been neglected by the party and left to our fatein our most dreadful and difficult times. We are confident, however, that with or without the party’s support, we shall triumph in the land of our ancestors.

Our votes may be immaterial to the outcome of Saturday’s Primaries. But we know that we surelycount someday. Meanwhile, we wish the party and all parliamentary aspirants
good luck.

Thank you

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Remedi Entertainment, Dan Lartey has stated on Kastle FM that the statement by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey that Parliament isn’t for jokes is questionable. Speaking on the Kastle Entertainment Show with Amansan Krakye monitored by ghanaian blogger, Dan Lartey fumed at the Foreign Affairs Minister following the recent incident that happened in Parliament during the election of the Speaker.

He said “Some people think that the creative arts industry is a joke. If you’d remember, before the 2020 general elections, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey came out to make a statement concerning John Dumelo’s parliamentary bid.

“She said that Parliament is not meant for jokes. So if Parliament is not for jokes then what did we see in Parliament in the last few days? What we saw happening in the Parliament of Ghana wasn’t honourable. An honourable person is someone who is well revered and respected for demonstrating a certain behaviour pattern in society, which is worthy of emulation,” he added. “And to be seeing someone who is supposed to be honourable kicking ballot boxes and others snatching ballot papers on live TV, then I think the statement made by Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey that Parliament is not for jokers or Parliament is for serious-minded people becomes questionable,” he fumed.

He concluded, “So if John Dumelo who is a creative arts person wouldn’t do that and these honourables are rather doing that, between the honourable and the creative arts industry player who deserves to be in parliament?”

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Thursday appealed to the leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to remain focused and united to ensure the stability and progress of the party.

He said infighting and finger-pointing would create volatilities inimical to the party, which in turn could lend the opposition some serious political capital.

“The most important thing for us to do at this stage, is to keep together…is to reinforce our unity and maintain our morale,” he said in meeting with the NPP’s regional executives and chairmen of the constituencies in the Greater Accra Region, at the Jubilee House, Accra.

“If we are going to spend a lot of energies pointing fingers at each other, neither of those things are going to be attained,” he told them.

The President told the party officials that what should occupy them was to counter the false narratives the opposition was propagating about the outcome of the December 2020 elections.

“So I want you very much to have that in mind, you’ll have something else, very important in mind, these NDC people making so much noise, we won we won, remember they began, one time we even went to 145 seats, they could never be quite clear how many with 139, 140 , 141, 145, Mahama had won the election.

“It turned out all to be false, and we should remember, ever since Jerry John Rawlings left the presidential scene of politics in our country, no NDC presidential candidate has won more than 51 percent of the votes. His successor Mills, in his first round against Kufour 44 per cent, second round 47 per cent.

“When it came to the second time against Kufour the same figures and in 2008. When he contested against me after three rounds he got 50.03 per cent of the vote. Mahama in 2012, got 50.7, in 2016, 44 per cent of the votes, in 2020 47 per cent of the vote.

“What these figures tell us is that whenever we NPP put our acts together we win,” he stated

President Akufo-Addo reinforced the fact that “the majority is with us, so let us be very clear in our mind, our opponent with all the shouting do not have the support of the majority of the people in our country.”

“So the future of Ghana, the future of this country is in our hands. It is the function of how we behave, how we organize ourselves that will determine how the country will also move ahead,” he stressed.

Leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in the 8th Parliament, Osei-Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, says the Speaker agrees his side is the majority.

According to the Member of Parliament (MP) for Suame Constituency, the Speaker, Alban Bagbin, who is the man at the centre, has declared the caucus the Fomena MP sides with will constitute the majority. Hence, the MP, Andrew Amoako Asiamah’s official notice to the Speaker in which he was copied validates the declaration.

The lawmaker made the disclosure in an interview on Accra-based GHOne TV.

“When we met on Tuesday, the Speaker declared the Fomena MP holds the trump card and when he makes the declaration wherever he decides to lay his head and spread his mat becomes the majority since his decision will swing the pendulum for the side he chooses to do business with,” the long-serving MP said. The Fomena MP on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, officially wrote to the Speaker on the side he will be doing business with.

Part of the letter read: “I Andrew Asiamah Amoako an independent MP for Fomena constituency and now the Second Deputy Speaker for the same parliament do hereby declare that I shall, for purposes of transacting business in the house, associate with the NPP caucus in the 8th parliament.”

However, the Suame lawmaker indicated he was still skeptical about the decision.

“I had the communication from him yesterday but I won’t put any premium on that since anything can happen and he can decide to change his mind so I will wait for tomorrow [Friday],” he added.
